The City of Karratha has welcomed the Federal Government’s pre-election commitment of $248 million to seal Karratha-Tom Price Road.
The funding allocation was announced today by Prime Minister Scott Morrison as part of a $1.6 billion infrastructure package for Western Australia.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long congratulated the Federal Government for their commitment to the road, which has been a priority for Council for many years.
“It is pleasing to see the Liberal Party of Australia acknowledge the Karratha–Tom Price Road is of strategic importance for Western Australia and commit to sealing the full length of the road,” Cr Long said.
“The condition of the road is very poor and sealing it will generate substantial economic and social benefits for the entire Pilbara region. These include improving travel times and access to healthcare for remote inland communities, enhancing flood resilience, and unlocking opportunities for our tourism and mining sectors.
“Council would like to thank the WA State Government for their strong advocacy on this issue and their commitment of $50 million towards the project, and we call on the Australian Labor Party to make a similar commitment to fund this vital regional infrastructure upgrade.”
Tenders for the construction of Stage 3, which includes the section of road from Karratha to Millstream Chichester National Park, are expected to be released by the end of March.
