A mezzanine spin studio and a functional fitness room will be the highlights of an expansion to the fitness facilities at the Karratha Leisureplex.
Tenders will now be called for the upgrades, which will be accommodated with the removal of the glow in the dark mini-golf.
City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the current gym was well used, however was quite small for the number of patrons serviced.
“We have had a good take up of memberships for our fitness facilities however the Leisureplex is a few years old now and we want to make sure we are still offering a great product,” Cr Long said.
“Fitness trends move quite quickly and having a high intensity interval training area is going to provide another option for our members and casual users from the community,” he said.
“Group fitness classes and small group personal training sessions are becoming very popular and we need more space to accommodate these types of training.”
Council decided to remove the mini-golf facility following falling patronage over the last 12 months.
The new space will be designed to allow for maximum flexibility to incorporate new fitness training trends and equipment in the future.
Council will assess a budget allocation for the gym expansion once tenders are received.
