REAF launches with Sharpe street party

Sharpe Avenue will be closed to traffic and open to market stalls and entertainers on Friday 16 September for the launch of Red Earth Arts Festival 2016.

Part of the entertainment sees Lunar Circus and MotoX demonstrations ahead of their major performances later in the weekend alongside live music and food stalls.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said REAF Launch street party was the ideal way to kick off the ten day arts festival and was looking forward to seeing the community out in force to enjoy the events program.

“The annual REAF Launch street party is one of the City’s biggest annual events and with a larger and more diverse entertainment line-up than ever before we expect to see a record turnout to kick off Red Earth Arts Festival for 2016,” Cr Long said.

“REAF is about bringing high-end arts entertainment to the City of Karratha with options for all ages and all interests. We’re delivering exactly that once again this year and I am very much looking forward to seeing the community embrace the eight major events that make up this year’s REAF program.”

Rio Tinto general manager Communities Linda Dawson said REAF launch was a fantastic event that got the whole community involved.

“From the performers and entertainers to the stall holders and caterers, REAF launch is a great night out for all the family and brings the best of Karratha and surrounding communities together in one celebration,” Ms Dawson said.

“It’s a great way to launch one of the City’s biggest events, and transforms the streets of Karratha into a hub of exciting, loud and colourful creativity.”

REAF Launch will begin at 6pm with a Corella parade along Sharpe Avenue featuring local, young artists who have created bird-themed puppets specifically for this opening street procession.
