City to test international flight market

The City of Karratha will further explore the feasibility of running an international charter flight by testing the market through an expression of interest process.

A business case commissioned by the City indicates there would be sufficient demand to operate a weekly service between Karratha and Singapore.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the EOI process was a good opportunity to test the market and drill down further into the costs of providing such a service.

“We know that residents are crying out for an international connection from Karratha and we have been pushing hard to achieve that with carriers,” Cr Long said.

“While airlines have been reluctant to take on any additional risk in the current market we have done the numbers and are confident that an international service from Karratha stacks up.”

“We now want to further test those assumptions and are calling for expressions of interests to run a charter service from Karratha to Singapore to demonstrate the viability providing an international route,” he added.

The City of Karratha will call for expression of interest later this month.
