Nickol West Park set for an upgrade

The much loved Nickol West Park is set for an upgrade that will include a playing field, formalized car parking and landscaped gardens to further improve the amenity of Nickol.

Detailed design for the upgrade will soon get underway with Council considering the priority works such as public toilets as part of the 2016/17 budget.

Funds for the enhancements will also be provided by the developers of Jingarri Estate as their public open space contribution required under their planning approval.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said the much loved park would benefit greatly from the expansion in facilities.

“The current park, with its skatespace, natural amphitheatre and open space is very well utilised by Nickol residents but we have always planned to have a much larger park in this area,” Cr Long said.

“Council officers are currently working out the details of exactly what will go into the final design, but we want to get started on some of the priority facilities, particularly public toilets, in the next financial year,” he said.

“We have upgraded a number of our public open space facilities and playgrounds across the City over the past year with the Bulgarra public open space project a great example of the fantastic facilities we are providing to our community.”

Planning for the project will continue with $200,000 being spent on detailed designs in the coming months to determine the full scope and budget of the project.

The next phase of improvements to the park will be considered alongside other park and open space projects for inclusion in the 2016/17 Council budget.
