International flights on the horizon

Tenders for a direct flight between Karratha Airport and Singapore are set to be called following an expression of interest process held by the City of Karratha.

Council deemed there was sufficient interest to proceed to tender following the market testing which was preceded by significant market research into the viability of a flight.

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long said it was an exciting time for Karratha Airport, following the Terminal Upgrade Project completed last year.

“The City of Karratha has made significant investments in creating a modern airport terminal with international capacity and we are excited at the prospect of attracting an international service to our City,” Cr Long said.

“We consistently receive feedback from the community that they want international flights and we hear them loud and clear and have been working hard on this process to deliver international service to Karratha,” he said.

“Following the EOI process we are now confident that there is interest from airlines in bringing this service to Karratha and that it can be done at a reasonable price. We will now move to the tender phase to make a final decision on whether to proceed.”

The tender process is expected to take until early in the new year, after which Council will make a decision on whether to proceed with a proposal.
